6:30 PM — Sunset
Watch the evening sky begin to darken as we prepare for a night of celestial discovery.
7:30 PM — Arrival and Early Evening Viewing
Park in the Education Centre parking lot and follow the path to the right of the main building. Telescopes will be ready for viewing the crescent Moon and Saturn, including a chance to see Saturn’s magnificent rings.
10:00 PM — Moonset and Deep-Sky Viewing
As the Moon sets, darker skies create better conditions for exploring the Milky Way and distant deep-sky objects, including galaxies and star clusters.
Stay as Long as You Like
Come for a short visit or stay late into the evening. Whether you want a quick look at the Moon or a deeper exploration of the cosmos, you can enjoy the experience at your own pace.
Guided by “The Dark Sky Guy,” Mike Warkentin, and amateur astronomers from the BlueWater Astronomical Society, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the universe through member telescopes.
Depending on viewing conditions, celestial highlights may include:
The Crescent Moon — Discover the Moon’s rugged surface and fascinating details.
Saturn and Its Rings — See one of the most spectacular sights in our solar system.
Distant Galaxies — Get a glimpse of star systems far beyond our own.
Globular Clusters — Explore dazzling collections of thousands of stars.
Double Stars — Discover pairs of stars shining together in the night sky.
Planetary Nebulae — Observe beautiful, glowing remnants of dying stars.
There’s something remarkable about seeing these celestial wonders with your own eyes!
Much of the event takes place outdoors, so being comfortable is important.
Warm Layers: Temperatures can drop quickly after sunset. Dress warmly in layers that you can add or remove as needed.
A Warm Hat or Toque: Keeping your head warm will make a big difference during extended viewing.
A Folding Lawn Chair: Bring a comfortable chair so you can relax between telescope viewings.
Your Sense of Wonder: No previous astronomy knowledge is needed — just come ready to explore!
A designated area inside the observatory will be available for warming up, but most of the evening will be spent outside.
Whether you’re an astronomy enthusiast, a curious beginner, or simply looking for a unique evening out, Beyond the Light: An Evening Under the Stars is an opportunity to connect with nature, learn something new, and experience the beauty of our universe.
Admission is free, but registration is requested by Wednesday, October 14 @ 9:00 p.m.
We look forward to seeing you beneath the stars!
